Sheet Links with cube

Hi,

I am connecting Tableau Desktop to a cube (SSAS). I setup a valid sheet link between two worksheets. However when I want to use the link, the sheet link is not valid. The following error message appears: 'Multidimensional slicing sets are not supported'. Does this mean I can only use one dimension as a filter on each sheet link? If yes, is there any workaround?

Are there any other restrictions when using hyperlinks with cubes? Also, are there any documentations/training sessions for use of Tableau with cubes?

Thanks,

Philipp

Update:
I could make it work. In my understanding it is possible to use several dimension as a filter for sheet links. However, on the linked worksheets and the filter the same hierachy within the selected dimensions must be used.

Update 2:
There doesn't seem to be much activity here. If at least somebody could give me any hints about where there are any documentations/training sessions for use of Tableau with cubes?

Thanks!!!!

Hi Philipp. There's a wider community here on the forums, but it's easier for things to slip through the cracks here versus User Support. I'll see if I can find something specific for your issue.

Phillip,

I'll attempt to explain what the restriction is, although it can be a bit complex.

"Multi-dimensional" is relatively easy -- it means that the has members from more than one dimension, i.e. more than one hierarchy. "Slicer" means that something is filtered, but it is not on the any of the shelves. For example, if my cube has a Geography dimension and a products dimension. I can create a view with Products on rows and Sales on columns. If I filter by Region (geography) to only show the East, but don't put any anything from Geography on anywhere (rows, columns, colors, level of detail, etc.), then my geography filter is a slicing filter.

Tableau has a restriction that it can only handle single dimensional slicers. So the example with filtering by Region works since it is a single dimensional slicer. As an alternative, suppose I have a multidimensional set covering Region and Product Type. My set has Coffee in the East and Herbal Tea in the South and I create a simple worksheet to show it (see the first picture). If I remove Product Type from the row shelf, now I've got a multi-dimensional slicer which is not supported (see the second picutre). If I then put Product Type on the level of detail shelf, the filter is not a slicing filter anymore (see the third picture).

Now let's get back to your situation. As you may have noticed, following hyperlink to another sheet creates a temporary set and puts uses that set on the filter shelf of the destination sheet. If you are getting errors when you follow a link, that means the link is defining at least two dimensions that don't appear on your destination sheet. A simple workaround is to put those dimensions on the level of detail shelf of the destination sheet -- it usually doesn't change the basic structure of the view, yet will insure that you can follow the links. Another possibility is that you may want to reduce the number of fields you are picking up from the link -- potentially you are including details that are not needed.

You've encountered the main restriction with hyperlinks and cubes. As far as training sessions, we've done a few things during our user conference for cube users, but do not have any regularly scheduled training sessions on cubes.

I hope my explanation helps.

Austin
